Ralf Schuhmacher is a formula 1 to 2007 racing driver and then the DTM driver until he ended his active career as a driver in 2013. Today he works as an entrepreneur and Formula 1 on television.
Early life
Ralf Schuhmacher was born on June 30, 1975 in Hürth near Cologne and grew in the neighboring city of Krispen. He is a 7-time younger brother of Formula 1 Champion Michael Schuhmacher and son of Rolf Schuhmacher, who works on the Kart line which is now famous in the crop.
Career
Ralf did his first round with Kart in the crop when he was 3 years old and followed the footsteps of his brother, Michaels, who had been a big success in the junior class. Ralf wants to do the same thing to his brother and in 1989 he won his first title as German Junior Karting champion.
In the next three years he made the Gold Cup, NRW Cup and Kart Junior Championship. In 1992 he turned to Junior Formula, the racing category for open, open racing cars. The following year he was runner-up in the Formula of Adac Junior and then received a contract for Formula 3, all under his supervision, Willi Weber’s manager.
There he achieved his first victory in Formula 3 with his team WTS and reached third place in the entire classification at the end of the season. The following year he was even able to increase his placement in the final classification and rise to second place, runner-up. With this success Ralf Schuhmacher can turn to Formula 3000 Europe, but on the advice of Willi Weber he drove in the Formula Nippon Japan, where he won the title of championship against Norberto Fontana in the last 1996 season. With this success, the doors to Formula 1 opened for young talent. No one prevents the contract with the Eddie Jordan racing team (Jordan F1) and he made his debut in 1997 in the main class of Motorsport.
Career highlights
Already in his first year in Formula 1, Ralf Schuhmacher showed a strong will and managed to reach his first podium in the third season in Argentina. In the end, Schuhmacher scored 13 points and Jordan F1 was fifth in the World Championship constructor. The following year there was a change in the machine in Jordan F1. The Peugeot engine is issued with and the Mugen-Honda drive unit is used. Schuhmacher scored 14 points, which was enough for the 10th place at the end of the season, and his racing team made the fourth place overall.
But there was a crisis in the team and therefore turned to Williams F1 then came in 1999. A year later, Williams F1 then became the BMW Works team and a career encouragement came from Ralf Schuhmacher. In Imola he won his first Formula 1 victory in 2001 and in the same season was followed by victory in Montreal and Hockenheim. Together with his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, Schuhmacher was celebrated as the best driver team in the international press.
A year later, he won the Malaysian Grand Prix and finished the fourth overall at the end of the season, right when he had the previous year. In the 2003 season, Schuhmacher celebrated the victory at the European Grand Prix and the French Grand Prix. Ralf the following season then had a serious accident at the Grand Prix in the US and had to stop for several months. He just drove four of the last races this year.
With changes to the Toyota team in 2005, Ralf Schuhmacher improved financially, but the stage was rather mediocre for a team based in Cologne. The F1 driver, who began with the hope of the title, only reached the sixth place and tenth in the overall ranking of the following year. His contract was not updated in 2007.
Ralf Schuhmacher celebrates 6 Formula 1 wins and scores 329 Grand Prix points. From 2008 he drove in DTM before retiring as an active driver five years later.
