Prince William is likely to become Prince Wales/Duke of Cornwall and his wife, Kate Middleton, Princess Wales, after the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday. Prince William held the title of Duke of Cambridge before the death of the Queen.
The title ‘Prince of Wales’ was reserved for a clear heir and held by Charles, now the King. The last ‘Princess of Wales’ title was held by Princess Diana because Duchess Camilla, Charles’s wife, chose not to use it because of respect.
The title change occurred after Queen Elizabeth, the longest king in England and the nation’s dolls for seven decades, died at the age of 96.
“The queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“The king and queen of Consort will remain in Balmoral tonight and will return to London tomorrow.”
Charles, 73, Elizabeth’s eldest son, automatically became the King of England and the Head of State of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. His wife, Camilla, became Queen Consort.
His family rushed to his side at his home in Scotland, Balmoral Castle, after the doctor expressed concern about his health. He has suffered from what Buckingham Palace called the problem of episodic mobility “since the end of last year, forcing him to withdraw from almost all of his public involvement.
