Mumbai: At least 138 people died in the rain-related incident, including several landslides, in Maharashtra. Death includes 36 who died in a landslide in Coastal Raigad, about 70 km from the capital of the state of Mumbai.
Some districts – especially the Concendan area – have received unrelenting rain for the past few days, leaving thousands stranded in floods and landslides.
“138 unintentional deaths were reported in Maharashtra due to rain and other monsoon-related incidents,” said Minister of Maharashtra and Rehabilitation, Vijay Wadettiwar.
Satara Regency in Maharashtra Barat has also been hit by rain and several people have been swept away by the flood, an official is reported to say by the PTI news agency. The official took the death count at Satara on 27.
Other deaths include those reported from eastern districts such as Gondia and Chandrapur, he said.
“Rainfall in various parts of the country often coincides with the ups and downs and also out of the dam which causes various regions … will be flooded,” said the Maharashtra government in a press release.

At least 84,452 people, including more than 40,000 in Kolhapur Regency, were shifted to safer places in the West Maharashtra Pune Division, officials said. At least 54 villages have been fully affected due to flooding while 821 are partly affected in Kolhapur, where the Panchganga River flows at a higher level than the witnessed during the flood peak in 2019, officials said.
Eleven people, including eight Nepalese workers, took the bus had a narrow escape because they were saved on the time before the vehicle was swept away in Kolhapur Regency on Friday, PTI reported quoting police officials.
Apart from the Raigad district, landslides were also reported in the village of Ambeghar and Mirgaon at Satara during Thursday night.
The Rescue Team of the National Disaster Response, the State Disaster Response Force and other institutions have existed in the state to help assistance work. Six Indian and Navy Army teams are expected to join the rescue work today.
The Maharashtra government has announced compensation of each ₹ 5 lakh against their families killed. What was injured would be hospitalized at the cost of the government, a statement from the office of the Chairperson of the Minister of UDDHAV Thackeray.
Heavy rains since the last two days have caused massive floods in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.
The Department of Indian Meteorology, or IMD, has issued a red warning for the six districts that have been influenced by rain, estimating “very heavy” rainfall and recommend prevention steps.
Floods and landslides are ordinary during the rainy season, which also often sees buildings and walls built badly after relentless rainy days.
